Embodying this essence, Dharohar Weaves is an initiative founded by Dr. Priyanka, a practicing diabetologist and Director of Satkriti Hospitals Private Limited, Varanasi, with a mission to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Banarasi weaving art.
Dr. Priyanka’s inspiration for Dharohar Weaves came from her encounters with struggling weavers (Bunkars) during her medical practice. These weavers shared heart-wrenching stories about harsh working conditions, exploitation by intermediaries, and their art’s diminishing value.
Balancing her roles as a diabetologist and hospital director, she embarked on a mission to take Banarasi weaving to a global platform, ensuring the world recognizes its intricate beauty and cultural significance. Through Dharohar Weaves, Dr. Priyanka strives to uplift weavers’ livelihoods by providing them a direct platform to showcase and sell their masterpieces— nationally and internationally—bypassing exploitative middlemen.
To her, a Banarasi saree is not just a piece of fabric; it is an artist’s creation and a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage.
